The rehabilitation science is an emerging area in India. Though much progress
has been made during the last 4 - 5 Years ; 5 decades yet lot needs to be done to provide services to each & every individual
with a disability. Various estimates give varying figures of disabled in India. WHO estimates that more than 10% population
suffers from some kind of disability. The census report 2002 indicates that 2.1% population of the country suffers from some
kind of disability. N.S.S.O. survey report, 2001 also estimates 1.9% population suffers from one or the other form of disability,
excluding MR. While the prevalence of disability is an issue open for debate, it is a fact that India has a very large population
of disables who are in need of education, training, employment, placement & rehabilitation service. This is a gigantic
task to achieve.
Every form of disability demands rehabilitation, but it is a general notion that severe impairments
draw more attention. The mild & moderate cases who go unidentified & unnoticed as disabled require professional intervention
for successful integration to the mainstream. So, the demand for professional service is the need of hour.
The needs
of the disabled can be well looked after through certain forums or professional bodies who play a proactive role & also
organize events to highlight utility of their services for the affected people.
Professional services can be expanded
through publications, which binds the professionals & keeps them in touch with the changing times. Apart from publications;
holding conferences, CRE programs also help the professionals contemporize themselves to the changing demands of the society.
This is the first attempt by OSHA to bring out a professional souvenir & it is hoped that his will be useful &
serve as a reference tool for the professionals, researchers, trainees, students, parents & persons with disability.
